Welcome February

As we look at the start of February we are also looking at some pretty cold weather. Please remember to dress your child in weather appropriate clothing. This means a winter coat, hats and mittens for this cold weather. When the temperatures dip below 50 degrees, a sweatshirt alone is not enough for children who are out at recess. If we can help with a new winter coat, please contact either Mrs. Melley or me (Dr. Kukstis) and we will provide a new coat.

At the same time, our lost and found is overflowing! Below is a picture of some of the items that have been abandoned and are now in lost and found. PLEASE take a moment to visit lost and found and claim any of your child's items.

At this time of the year we have many students who have signs of colds, coughs, the flu and other illnesses. Many times our school nurse, Mrs. Melley,  is asked, "When do I keep my child home from school?"

Here is helpful information from  Mrs. Melley:

Please keep your child home from school if he/she has:
  • Temperature of 99.9 or higher.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours.
  • Fever of unknown origin that causes chills, sweating or muscle aches.
  • Strep infections of any kind, ringworm, conjunctivitis, or impetigo. These are all contagious infections and must be treated with medication for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Rash of unknown origin-this may indicate many different things and should be checked by a doctor.
  • Pain such as earaches, toothaches, and headaches should be taken seriously and need evaluation by a doctor.

Afro-Brazilian Ensemble

BCHMCPS students, staff and families were treated to a wonderful performance this morning from the Afro Brazilian Ensemble. Thanks to generous funding from the Barnstable Education Foundation and coordination and planning by Mrs. Milne, we enjoyed informative and enjoyable performances. Thank you to the BEF, Mrs. Milne and our families who also came in to watch today's show. If you were unable to attend, the pictures below capture some of the fun.

We at BCHMCPS wish you a happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

Please be safe during the predicted bad weather this weekend and go Patriots!

This Week at BCHMCPS

Today your children took part in an evacuation drill at school. We practiced how to leave the building and where we would go in case of an emergency in the school that would cause us to need to leave.
The children did a great job! You will want to take this opportunity to speak with your child/ren about the drill today. We will be practicing again sometime this year.
A special thanks to Sergeant Perry and Officer Shaw from the Barnstable Police Department who assisted us with this drill. Please feel free to contact me (Dr. Kukstis) with any questions or concerns.

The monthly Principal Coffee will be held tomorrow morning, Tuesday January 15th,  from 9-9:30. An informational update on the status of the Innovation School planning will be part of the monthly Principal Coffee.

This Thursday, January 17th, at 6:00 a general PTO meeting will be held at the school. Please join the PTO as they plan for important upcoming events. Your input and support are always needed and appreciated.

BCHMCPS families are invited to join us on Friday, January 18th for a very special performance by Capoeira: Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts, Music, and Dance! As a result of a generous grant from the Barnstable Education Foundation and out Title I federal grant funding, we are pleased to bring this exciting, interactive experience to our students at  BCHMCPS. We will host back-to-back performances. Both will be held in the Gym, with Grades 2 & 3 attending from 9:30-10:15 and Kindergarten and Grade 1 from  10:30-11:15.

About Capoeira: From the streets of Brazil comes Capoeira: a unique hybrid of martial arts and dance in which partners pair off and spar in graceful, fluid motions, incorporating acrobatic flips and tumbles, all to the lively rhythms of Afro-Brazilian drumming. Using traditional costumes, colorful maps, live music, Portuguese language, and direct student engagement, the Afro-Brazilian Ensemble brings this unique movement form to life within its cultural context. In addition to Capoeira, two other important dance styles, the Maculele and the Samba, are introduced. Student volunteers will be called upon to get up and try out some moves.
